Easter baking ideas kids will love

Robin

Easter weekend is a great time to spend time with the family and bake some delicious treats. Whether you want to make a large celebration cake, small cupcakes or biscuits, there’s a great selection of spring-themed baked goods you can make with your little ones. Here are some of our top picks that we think you and your kids will love this Easter break.

Simnel cake

A traditional seasonal bake, Simnel cake is a classic sweet treat that combines dried fruit, spices and marzipan. There are loads of variations on this classic fruit cake, including using pistachio marzipan and sour cherries instead of mixed fruit. Whatever flavours you and your kids enjoy the most, you can combine them into this cake for the ideal centrepiece at your Easter meal. A simnel cake is a real showstopper that your whole family will be impressed by.

Hot cross buns

Hot cross buns are a great Easter treat to bake with little ones and they’re a classic for this time of year. Traditional hot cross buns have a slightly spiced flavour, are packed with juicy dried fruit and have a sticky glaze on the top, and they’re even better when you know you’ve made them yourself.

While they look impressive, they’re easier than you might think to make and, just like other baked treats, making them with your kids can teach them plenty of useful skills as well. The classic white crosses on the top can be made with a flour paste or you can use marzipan or chocolate instead. These fruited bread buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday and over the Lent period.

Chocolate nests

You’ll no doubt remember making Easter nests yourself at school, so why not make them with your own kids this year? They’re quick and easy to make and they make for a tasty treat that the kids will enjoy. You can use shredded wheat or cornflakes, mixed with melted chocolate, and formed into small nest shapes that you can then fill with mini eggs and other decorations. Your kids will have a great time decorating their creations that they can then enjoy over the Easter weekend.

Chocolate cupcakes

Cupcakes are fun to make with kids and they can enjoy decorating them however they like once they’re cooked. Chocolate is a classic flavour that suits the Easter theme perfectly, and they’re easy to make. You can play with different combinations of white and milk chocolate, and decorate them with mini eggs, sweets and chocolate buttercream. In less than an hour, you and your kids will have a tray of delicious cupcakes to enjoy, so it’s a great weekend baking project.

Easter biscuits

If you don’t fancy making cakes but you want to take on a baking project with your little ones, biscuits are the perfect option. They last several days, there are plenty of flavours you can experiment with and you can decorate them afterwards. From shaped biscuits, shortbreads and sandwich biscuits that you can fill with jam or buttercream, the options are practically endless. Biscuits and cookies are simple to make and they can be topped with either fondant or royal icing in a rainbow of colours.
